Founded in 1988, Amsterdam Sinfonietta is an independent music ensemble with an international reputation and a rich, varied repertoire. Studio Dumbar has worked with the ensemble for over a decade, designing their new brand identity (which launched in 2018) as well as its predecessor. One of the most notable aspects of the collaboration is the evolving poster series designed to advertise concerts.
Since the beginning, the design of the seasonal posters has been driven by one aim – to create visually arresting posters that succeed in expressing the innovative spirit and broad spectrum of music performed by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Although always recognisable as Amsterdam Sinfonietta posters, each new series differs radically from the previous one. To ensure a fresh approach, a different designer creates each new series, with individual posters responding graphically to the musical themes of the performance being advertised.
This multi award-winning series continues to produce remarkable imagery, while retaining an instantly recognisable signature style for Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
Awards to date include plaudits from the British Design & Art Directors Club (D&AD), Deutsche Dezign Preis, Type Directors Club New York, Society of Typographic Design, and the BDA (Business Design Association), as well as: one iF Design Award; two European Design Awards; six awards from the Red Dot Competition for Communication Design; two Art Directors Club Nederland (ADCN) awards; and five from the Festival Internationale de l’Affiche et du Graphisme de Chaumont.
