DEMO Design in Motion Festival returns to push the boundaries of motion design across 15 cities worldwide, building on the success of previous editions. First launched in 2019, DEMO quickly became one of the most unique and impactful showcases of motion design, turning the screens of Amsterdam Central station into a vibrant 24h exhibition. Following the success of the ‘22 edition, which expanded nationwide to the Netherlands, DEMO 25 took this even further, raising the bar once again.

Strategy

This year’s festival challenged our team’s capabilities, presenting new opportunities to improve. An expanded number of sponsors and stakeholders to engage with, a collaboration with Macron to create an exclusive DEMO jersey, and logistical challenges because of DEMO simultaneously taking place in 15 cities across 7 countries. The festival’s scope has expanded in exciting ways, raising the stakes. We’ve significantly grown creatively, technically, and logistically to address these challenges.

Design

The identity design took yet another leap forward by fully embracing the festival's international expansion. The playful and distorted globe became a new key element, while integrating in the motion identity of the festival. The DEMO logo and typography remained at the core while the brand colour switched again to complete the RGB spectrum; blue for DEMO 25, Green ‘22, Red ‘19. For those who couldn’t join us on location, all motion was displayed online in the new DEMOVERSE — made in collaboration with VLGE and composed of 10 thematic 3D worlds populated by walking DEMO letters. The merch expanded once again with the design of a custom DEMO jersey, realized in collaboration with Macron. For this year’s sound design, the team aimed for contrasting elements: ethereal and spacious sounds, alongside heavier and textural ones. An extensive sound library was created in response to motion tests, evolving the sonic identity. This year's approach was bigger, louder, and more experimental, drawing inspiration from IDM, ambient, and hardcore genres.

Results

This year, the curatorial team reviewed an impressive 5,400 motion works submitted from 92 countries—surpassing submissions from the past two editions and proving that DEMO Festival’s reach continues to expand. With the display of more than 600 artworks in major cities like Amsterdam, Hamburg, Brussels, Barcelona, Vancouver, and Los Angeles, and many pieces specifically created to fit the bespoke size of the screens; DEMO reached millions of visitors, further cementing its position as the world’s largest motion design event.
